About the Project

Eolus is studying the possibility of building an offshore wind farm in the Bothnian Sea. The Navakka project area is located approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of Merikarvia in the Satakunta region on the west coast of Finland. The project area, which totals 670 square kilometers, is within Finland’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Plans for Navakka include installing 70-100 wind turbines, with a total production capacity of 1,500 megawatts (MW). The project would add 6.5-7 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable electricity to Finland’s electricity grid. This would help respond to a rising demand for electricity owing to the rapid electrification of industry, transportation, and heating.

Navakka: Ready for deployment in the 2030s

  • 2022: Preliminary studies in the project area
  • 2023: Launch of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
  • 2023-2026: Assessments continue, permitting phase
  • 2025: Projected completion of the EIA process
  • 2025-2028: Technical design phase
  • 2028-2030: Construction phase
  • 2030+: Projected beginning of production phase

Project status

The Navakka project is currently in the EIA phase. The two-stage process includes a comprehensive assessment of the project’s impacts on nature, such as to the marine environment, and impacts from electricity transmission infrastructure on land. The goal of the work is to identify harmful impacts in advance, allowing their mitigation or elimination.
